(a) The principle of Colossus Rectangling.

To render the gadget more intelligible the how and why of Colossus

Suppose that the Chi 1, Chi 2 triggers each contain one cross, that Q = X ;

Plug Delta-Z1 + DeltaZ2 = .

Throw the lower stepping switches, so that chi 1 (down) steps fast and

Chi 1 will step, producing a row of the rectangle : when Chi 1 reaches the

Chi 1 then step again, producing the next row, and so on.
